You guys, this Ex Hex record is rocking my world right now. I have listened to nothing but this album since this NPR post with “First Listen” streaming of the whole record. I pre-ordered my copy from Merge Records right away and it arrived just a few days later. I CANNOT STOP LISTENING. I haven’t been this in love with a record in a long, long, long-long, long time. Actually, what I should say is this is the first record made after 1976 that I have been in love with like this in a long, long, long-long, long time. All the tracks are short and sweet and snappy and catchy as all get out. This is definitely a record you can bop your head along and dance to from start to finish. It’s packed tight with pleasing harmonies, tough guitar riffs, rock-solid rhythms, and hints of flavors like The Cars, Modern Lovers, Buzzcocks, and early REM. I am a long-time admirer (worshiper) of all things Mary Timony. Helium, The Spells, Wild Flag, and solo Mary Timony albums have all been cherished favorites, so I was surprised that Rips was such a departure from her signature sound. This doesn’t really sound like a Timony record – which isn’t a good or a bad thing, just unexpected. Though, I think pieces of old school Timony word-crafting still leak through with phrases like “tall tree power” – there ain’t nobody else who would come up with something like that.
Do yourself a favor and buy this record right this very second. You won’t be sorry you did. I promise.

Ex Hex “Rips” was officially released October 7, 2014.
