Weekend Warriors

It was an action packed weekend, kids. Let’s revisit it together through the magic of pictures…

My dad helped us chop down this gigantic Statue-of-Liberty-sized, half-dead apricot tree in the back corner of our yard. Now our neighbors don’t have to live in fear of it crushing their homes. Bye-bye, tree. I am one step closer to being an Orc.

We finally got our new couch! We’ve had some money set aside since before Christmas to purchase this thing. It’s just been a matter of having the time to do it and be able to borrow a van to transport it and take our old couch to the dump. We are now classy people who don’t need to have their couch propped up on phone books. Simone approves.

We spent some more time at the arcade. I’m really making some headway with Goonies. Karate Champ was out of order. I’ll see YOU at the dojo, dorks!

We also finished wiring our garage for electricity. There is no picture for that. Just imagine Greg swearing a lot and me holding a ladder.

Oh, and P.S… In case you were wondering how Oates was. It was magical and oh so worth it. That tiny man can keep runnin’ laps in my dreams for as long as he wants.

P.P.S. I started watching Hannibal. I finished Season 1 and now I just have to get caught up on Season 2. To quote July in the film adaptation of Annie, “Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness!” What’s gonna happen?! How will Will and Hannibal ever be BFFs now???? Will Alana REALLY take care of Will’s doggy babies for him? How many more ears will Will have to barf up? How long do we have to wait for Jack to reveal that Will’s been lost in the Matrix this whole time and it’s all been a bad, bad dream?? Scully has to be wise to Hannibal at this point, right? I mean, am I right? When will Will get a shave and a haircut???? Ahhhhhh!

DMV letdown

So let me tell you a little story about the DMV. Right when you get in the door you move into this line, like cattle heading into the slaughter house. When it’s your turn you hand over your paperwork to some lady in a cubicle with a tall counter who barks at you to sit down. You sit down in this crazy chair that feels like you’re going to fall backwards and as you’re trying your best to sit up straight so that you don’t look like Jabba the Hut, you are ordered to take off your glasses. Now you can’t see. She tells you to look into the camera, but you can’t see the camera BECAUSE YOU ARE BLIND. As you try to get your bearings and to try to orient yourself, you think, surely this broad will at the very least give you a one-two-three countdown before the photo is taken, but NO. Just as you start to squint and try to sit up straight to prepare yourself for the photo that will haunt you for the next million years of your life she is already shouting “Next!”
What the crap? I look like Charlize Theron in “Monster.”My neck looks like it’s the same width as my head and my head looks like it’s the shape of a pie. A monster pie! Whyyyyyy? DMV, you’re tearin’ me apart!!!!

Arcade fire in my heart

The other night, just as I was raising a fork full of pasta to my mouth, Greg came busting through the front door and ordered me to stop what I was doing and come with him.

Greg: We have to go on a surprise adventure right now!

Me: Right now?

Greg: Right now! Put on your shoes!

So I put down my plate of ravioli and got in the car, wondering what in the world was going on as Greg tried his best not to explode in a poof of overexcited confetti. Five minutes later we were standing in front of an arcade. How long has this nerd shangrila been minutes away from our home? I don’t know, but I do know that we will come here often… that is, until it disappears like Brigadoon in the mist, never to return again for the next one hundred years.
In the last week we’ve made it back twice. My go-to favorites so far are Karate Champ, Berzerk, and Goonies. The Goonies arcade game was a bit confusing to me at first, but I think I have a new plan of attack all worked out and I’m anxious to put it to the test. My second tier favs are Spy Hunter, Krull, and Return of the Jedi. Who’s got some quarters?

Angie’s Guide to Spring Survival

Stay in. Let’s face it, after those long, dark winter months, you may not be ready to come out of hibernation just yet. Why force it? You are an individual. Give yourself the respect you deserve by emerging on your own timetable. Just because that groundhog was wrong, doesn’t mean you have to speed up YOUR timeline. Stay in. Drink some tea. Watch your stories. Might I recommend My Mad Fat Diary (Series 2 is happening RIGHT NOW), Dead Like Me, The Mighty Boosh, or Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace?

Kill all the spiders. Have you heard? Have you seen them? Sneaking in the dark? Brazenly strolling in the light? In the shower? Above your bed? On your face? They’re coming! They’re already here! They’re EVERYWHERE! Spiders: Nature’s jerks. They’re bold. They’re big. They’re crawly. AND to make matters worse, some of them can make you die. Guess who killed a black widow in her bedroom the other night? This one. Guess who’s never sleeping again? Moi. It really makes you long for those first days of winter when you felt sad and everything in nature was dying before your very eyes…

Consider ghost hunting. It’s getting to be warm enough at night that you don’t have to fear freezing to death like Jack Nicholson at the end of The Shining when you venture out (Well, maybe not for some of you East Coast losers. Sorry, kids. Watch out for those White Walkers. I hear they’re a real drag, unless you’ve got any babies to feed them.). Well, while you’re outside in the dark reveling in your new found ability to feel your limbs whilst in the great outdoors, why not bring a flashlight and a tape recorder with you and try to commune with the dead?

Stay tuned for more tips…

Oates, you make my dreams come true

You guys, in five days I will actually be in the same room with John Oates. You don’t even know what a big deal this is. Oates has literally haunted my dreams for YEARS. I regularly have dreams wherein John Oates makes an appearance. I have no idea why he has such a strong hold on my subconscious, but who am I to question the cosmos? We obviously have some sort of spiritual connection. Right? I mean, am I right? What will happen when we are actually in the same room together? Will planets collide? Stars align? Will I be asked to quit my job and become a backup singer for Hall & Oates? Probably. I’ll just plan on it. How long should I wait to give my boss notice? A few more days? Two hours? Right now?

That same night, Leslie & The LYs will be performing elsewhere in town, but I think I can make both work. Oates is fulfilling my fantasies at 7 PM and Leslie ain’t starting until a few hours later. I can do this. I will make my dreams come true. Nothing can stop me! Mwuahahahahaha!

I don’t have the strength to tell you about my The Secret Circle/Vampire Diaries bender. Sometimes you start down a path and it’s easier to keep going forward than to turn back. Let’s leave it at that.

Needles and pin-suh

I picked up my knitting needles again. It’s been a while, dudes. Oh, it’s been a while. I decided I wanted to make a cowl for myself, but made the mistake of starting this one with a stockinette stitch. By the time this sucker started curling up around the edges I was too far in to have the energy to start it over again. I made a few sloppy mistakes along the way (okay, A LOT of sloppy mistakes) and did a pretty crummy job of binding the two ends together. To borrow from Bette Midler, this baby only looks good “from a distance.”

Second time around, I chose to stick with a knit stitch the whole way through. Much better. Much, much better.

Making it through two cowls in four days was definitely the practice I needed to get back into the swing of things. Who wants to hang out and craft with me?

P.S. Did I mention my girl Leslie is playing here next month and I need a date…?

Buddy Holly singing
Buddy Holly died 55 years ago, today. You can read about the crash here and check out this article about the contents of Buddy Holly’s overnight bag. It was recovered from the crash site, but not opened until 1989.

My first electric guitar was a cheapo Mexican made Fender Stratocaster and as I was struggling along to make anything that sounded like music, I felt great pride knowing that Buddy Holly played a Strat, too. Someday soon I have to make the trip to Lubbock, Texas and visit the Buddy Holly Center.

Here’s the first episode:

If you like The IT Crowd and feel nostalgic about 80’s television, you’ll love it. I promise.

Inappropriate rockstar crush feelings
No Comments

Posted by kissthechicken on January 17, 2014 in diary, movies, music | Short Link

Look away, Angie! Avert his gaze! It’s too powerful! Ahhhh!

I have inappropriate rockstar crush feelings about Chris Bell, knocking Scott Walker down from first place to a temporary second.

“What gives, Ang? I thought you and I had a thing?”

Last summer I listened to “I am the Cosmos” pretty much nonstop. I wanted Bronco to cover “I Got Kinda Lost” (maybe someday?). Usually I’d listen to that album when I was feeling mopey or emo-shun-al, but it wasn’t until then that I started to appreciate the rockers on that album. Recently the Big Star documentary came out, “Big Star:  Nothing Can Hurt Me.” All the Chris Bell parts made me cry. You should watch it. It’s streaming on Netflix right now. I think you can still download it on iTunes, too. The universe always seems to align with my obsessions. At the height of my Scott Walker love, the documentary on Scott Walker,  “Scott Walker: 30 Century Man,” came out. Thanks, cosmos, for feeding the flame. You really got my back.

Listen to I am the Cosmos in full here.
